International Labor Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations.
The ILO was created in 1919, as part of the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I and initiated the creation of the League of Nations. The ILO became a first specialized agency of UN in 1946.
The ILO formulates the international labor standards in a form of conventions and recommendations by setting the minimal standards of the basic labor rights: freedom of associations, collective bargaining, prohibition of compulsory work, equality of possibilities and other standards that regulates the conditions and other aspects of work.
Should the relevant procedure is observed the conventions and recommendations of ILO become part of the national legislation. Due to their universal character the conventions and recommendations of ILO can be applier in Court practice.
Currently, Ukraine ratified 59 ILO conventions.
ILO provides technical assistance in the following spheres :
- Professional training and retraining;
- Employment policy;
- Labor management;
- Labor law ;
- Labor conditions;
- Development of management;
- Cooperation;
- Social Security;
- Labor statistics, job security.
ILO promoter the development of the independent organizations of employees and employers, provides training and consultations. Within the UN system the ILO is a unique tripartite organization where representatives of employers and employees sides are equal to the governmental side in the work of the governing bodies
